History
The story of lérias begins in the 14th century, when the Poor Clare nuns of the Order of Saint Clare began preparing pastries inside Portuguese convents. Using simple ingredients such as eggs, sugar, and almonds, they created delicate recipes that soon became treasured beyond the convent walls. Over time, these sweets were prepared for special occasions and shared with the community, with each generation carefully passing down the recipes and the craft behind them.
The Lérias continue this tradition as one of the most beloved sweets of Amarante. In 1930, the historic Confeitaria Casa das Lérias, led by the visionary confectioner Alcino dos Reis, helped bring these traditions to the city’s streets, turning the pastry into a symbol of Amarante that is still remembered and enjoyed today.
Our Pastry Chef
At Casa das Lérias, our pastry chef Ricardo Tiago carefully recreates the traditional recipe of the Léria, preserving its original flavour while preparing each pastry with patience and precision. His work follows the same spirit that once defined the historic confectionery of the house.
Every Léria is made by hand, using Portuguese almonds sourced from the north of the country. Some variations bring together flavours from across Portugal – from apples grown near Alcobaça in the centre to oranges from the sunny Algarve in the south.
To prepare them, we work closely with local producers who share our respect for quality and tradition. From the careful selection of ingredients to the final preparation, every step is carried out with attention and care.
