What Are Lérias? Discover the Traditional Sweet of Amarante

If you are visiting Amarante in Northern Portugal, there is one local sweet you will quickly come across: Lérias.

Small, dark and made with almonds and sugar, Lérias are one of the traditional sweets most closely associated with Amarante. They are also the inspiration behind Casa das Lérias, a boutique hotel and café in the historic centre of Amarante, overlooking the Tâmega River.

But what exactly are Lérias, and what makes them special?

What are Lérias?

Lérias de Amarante are a traditional Portuguese sweet made with almonds, dark sugar, flour and water.

The dough is shaped into small pieces, baked and then finished with a sugar syrup. The result is a compact sweet with a rich almond flavour and a distinctive dark golden colour.

Unlike many Portuguese convent sweets, Lérias are not based on eggs. Their recipe is particularly interesting for its simple combination of almonds, sugar and flour.

The history of Lérias in Amarante

Lérias are part of the long confectionery tradition of Amarante, a town in Northern Portugal known for its convent sweets.

According to the Portuguese Directorate-General for Agriculture and Rural Development, the recipe for Lérias was recovered from recipes associated with the Convent of Santa Clara in Amarante by Alcino dos Reis, also known as Alcino das Lérias.

This connection is an important part of the story of Casa das Lérias.

The building that is now Casa das Lérias was once a historic confectionery where Alcino dos Reis helped revive and reinterpret traditional sweets from Amarante. Today, the hotel and café continue that connection through Lérias themselves.

What do Lérias taste like?

The traditional Léria is all about almond and caramelised sweetness.

The texture is compact rather than soft, with a pronounced almond flavour. The dark sugar gives the sweet its characteristic colour and deeper taste.

At Casa das Lérias, you can also discover several variations of the traditional recipe, including Cocoa, Apple & Cinnamon, Spices, Port Wine and Citrus.

Where to try Lérias in Amarante

One of the easiest places to try them is Casa das Lérias, right in the centre of Amarante.

The café combines traditional Lérias with freshly roasted coffee, modern desserts, sandwiches and takeaway options. Its terrace overlooks the Tâmega River and garden, making it an easy stop while exploring the historic centre of Amarante.

You can have a Léria with an espresso, choose a box to take home, or try several flavours.

Lérias as a souvenir from Amarante

Traditional Portuguese sweets make particularly good souvenirs because they are small, local and connected to a specific place. Lérias are no exception.

A box of Lérias lets you take a taste of Amarante with you – whether you are travelling onwards through Northern Portugal or returning home.

And if you are staying at Casa das Lérias, you don’t even have to go far to find them.

More traditional sweets from Amarante

Lérias are only one part of the local confectionery tradition.

Other traditional sweets associated with Amarante include Papos de Anjo, Brisas do Tâmega, Toucinho do Céu, Foguetes and São Gonçalo sweets.

So if you are interested in Portuguese food and local traditions, Amarante is a particularly good place to explore.

And the best place to start? Probably with a coffee and a Léria.
